The Foundational Years
1990-2000
The call of continuing working with youth in Otara did not diminish in Christchurch and it wasn't long before Sully returned with his family to Otara in 1991. Sully started again, this time working on teaching welding skills to youth while building gym equipment out of old shopping trolleys and scrap metal. Sully ran his own backyard gym out of his garage as a result of this work during this time which even saw the likes of Pauly Fuemana of OMC fame, pop in from time to time.
Crosspower Ministries Trust was established as a formal entity around this time and moved to a small industrial building in Otara. From here Sully based his youth work along with many volunteers, running a community centre, bike clubs, school holiday programs, wood-working and welding activities.
It was during this period that the Back To Learning alternative education program was established. Over this period, Crosspower expanded to four adjacent warehouse units with dozens of volunteers helping in various areas. By this point, Crosspower and Sully had established itself as an entity with a reputation of longevity and resilience, continuing programs even if funding wasn't forthcoming.
Sully was conscious of the need for Crosspower to continue to adjust and adapt to changing times and environment on the birth of the new millenium. Crosspower was about to enter another time to refocus priorities , re-think it's programs and consildate it's place as a a key outreach in the Otara community.
