The Building Years

2000-2010

This period saw Crosspower expand into larger premises only a stones throw from their original location. It allowed greater facilities with more room for other activities. Various projects began to develop and grow at this time including many projects now currently in operation.

The BTL program expanded further with up to 20 students at a time, based out of an old school facility in Sandbrook,Otara. These students have access to the skills development available through other projects under Crosspower.

The gym which started it all was rebranded as Positive Iron Fitness Club. It now had larger facilities within which to operate, providing weightlifting, boxing and other exercise services to the local community.

Kakapo Woodcraft was established as a way to provide work for unemployed and training for youth. Kakapo reached the point of supplying several Kings Plant Barns in the Auckland region.

Longrider Fibreglass was established to provide fibreglass services including building fibreglass outriggers and at the same time provide a valuable training venue for youth interested in these skills.

Dziah Dance Studio was established with the support of Crosspower to provide an outlet for talented Auckland youth. A hip hop dance stuido, this grew to include crews that found success in international competitions.

Street Dance New Zealand (SDNZ) was formed in tandem with the rise in popularity of hip hop/street dance among auckland youth. SDNZ is currently recognised as the organiser of the NZ Hip Hop Champs which determines who is eligible to compete in the World Hip Hop champs representing New Zealand. SDNZ also runs an annual 10 week dance mentoring program to develop dance talent in the region as well as provide a way to mentor youth who may need some direction in their lives. This program is known as the Dream programme.
