274 Youth Core

274 (Otara) Youth (Young People) Core (Heart) is a community initiated project that was established as a result of rising gang-related crime in the Otara area. This group of vibrant and passionate Youth Workers live by their motto- 274-24:7

Currently 274 (as they are known) are running:

•  Street Club programmes  which are based in identified “hot spots” around the suburb and are often held in other areas where young people learn life skills, have a chance to connect with youth workers, experience new activities and have a feed!

•  Sports mentoring programmes . 274 use the catalyst of sports to build relationships with, mentor and influence young people in Otara. In a suburb that is renowned for producing great athletes, 274 like to encourage sports participation and enhancement and at the moment are doing so through basketball, boxing and league.

•  Krump  Dance Crews Currently there are three dance crews that have had the opportunity to perform at local and city-wide events. Krump provides a positive expression of identity, confidence and unity.

•  Flip the Script School and Alternative Education-based Mentoring Programme

•  Summer Parks After-school activities. 274 set up fun activities around 8 of the local council parks where they connect on the street level, build relationships and have the opportunity to offer positive activities for young people to freely participate in.

They also hold community events:

What's your flava ?  Giving Young people to showcase and compete with their dance skills against other local dancers.
